ADELAIDE Crows new strength and
conditioning coach Nick Poulos has received
an international award – a bonus as he
prepares to start work at West Lakes next week.
Poulos won the top honour in his field at
the Australian Strength and Conditioning
Association’s international conference, the
club announced on its website.
He was appointed as the Crows’ strength and
conditioning coach in October, and starts work
next week after tying up some loose ends at his
current job in the Aspire Academy for Sports
Excellence in Doha.
The timing of Poulos’ return to Australia
coincided with the ASCA conference, where
he was presented with the Bruce Walsh award,
recognising outstanding work in the strength
and conditioning industry.
“The award came out of left-field a bit,” Poulos
told afc.com.au from Doha.
“Bruce Walsh was famous in Australian
weightlifting circles and coached quite a
number of athletes.
“He was very well-credentialed, so it’s a great
honour to receive an award in his name.”
Poulos hails from a rugby background, but
has spent the past four years working as the
strength and conditioning coach for the track
and field team at the Aspire Academy.

LAINE CLARK AND ED JACKSON : AAP
AUSTRALIAN vice-captain Shane Watson has given
his strongest indication yet that his days as opener are
numbered - but someone has forgotten to tell captain
Michael Clarke. Watson said his increased bowling
workload under new skipper Clarke made it difficult to
balance his role as opening batsman.
However, Clarke told reporters ahead of this week’s first
Test against New Zealand that he informed Watson
on their recent South African tour that he wanted the
strong all-rounder to continue as an opener.
“I have made it very clear that I think Watto is very
important to this team at the top of the order,” Clark said
of Watson, who will miss the clash against the Kiwis due
to a hamstring complaint.
“He’s been one of our best openers for a while now.
“He can bat in any position (but) I spoke to him in South
Africa and I said to him I think he is best for the team
when he opens the batting.”
Watson himself admitted he might need to consider a
move down the order to prolong his Test career.
“My role within the team has changed even over the
last six months, the amount that I bowl but also how
I’m used by Michael,” Watson told Fox Sports program
“I’m finding it a bit more difficult to be able to try and
balance the two.”
Watson said a good example was the quick turnaround
after he claimed 5-17 in the first Test in... Read more

GREG BUCKLE: AAP
JUNIOR Wimbledon champion Luke Saville’s a fan of Lleyton
Hewitt but he’s built more like Novak Djokovic, or least he hopes to
be in another year.
“I’m a good size. I may grow a little bit more which may mean a
bit more power in my serve,” the 186cm South Australian from the
Riverland region said this week.
“I’ve got to get stronger, fitter, faster.
“My game is a big, aggressive game so I’m not going to be scooting
around the baseline like Lleyton Hewitt.

Money up, members down
AFL premiers Geelong have
posted a 2011 net profit of just

per cent drop in membership.
Cook said the five per cent
drop in Geelong’s membership
